IN COURT : INDONESIAN WOMAN FINED RM2,500 FOR ASKING RM70 FOR SEX, FILIPINO MAN JAILED FIVE MONTHS & 15 DAYS ON 2 COUNTS OF CRIME

RM70 for sex : Woman fined RM2,500

Kota Kinabalu August 20, 2011: An Indonesian woman, who asked for RM70 from her client for sexual services, was fined RM2,500 or three months behind bars by the Magistrate's Court here.

Magistrate Herlina Muse ordered Rita Nandiyah, 36, to pay the fine after she pleaded guilty to soliciting for the purpose of prostitution at 4.04pm on July 22, this year at a room in a shophouse near Jalan Pantai, here.

Rita was supposed to stand trial on the charge under Section 372B of the Penal Code, which carries a jail term of up to one year or fine, or both, on conviction, but changed her plea to guilty.

Herlina ordered Rita to be referred to the Immigration Department after paying her fine or serving her jail sentence.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Chow Siong Kiong, who tendered the facts of the case, told the court that Rita was arrested together with her male client in the said place during a raid by police.

The man told the police that he had paid Rita RM70 for sex, he said, adding that police also recovered three used condoms.

In another case, a 26-year-old Filipino was jailed a total of five months and 15 days on two counts of crime.

Magistrate Nuruhuda Mohd Yusof handed the jail sentence to Jackson Patin @ Potok after he admitted to both charges against him.

On the first count, Jackson was sentenced to four months' jail for taking syabu on July 31 in the city area.

On the second, he was jailed another 45 days for failing to explain how he came to have two handphones and three silver rings, suspected to have been stolen, at 7.10am on July 3 at a house in Menggatal.

Nuruhuda ordered Jackson to serve the jail sentences consecutively and to be referred to the Immigration Department upon completion of his jail sentence. Inspector Syahrin prosecuted the case.
