Five tons of cooking oil seized from P'pines bound ferry

APMM-Logo.png14th April, 2011 SANDAKAN: The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) here seized five tons of cooking oil worth nearly RM200,000 from a Zamboanga City-bound passenger ferry on Tuesday night.

MMEA Maritime District (MD) 17 enforcement chief, Captain Mohd Onn Khalil said MMEA patrol boat KM Tebrau intercepted the ferry in Sandakan waters as it began its return voyage to the Southern Philippines at about 8.30pm following a tip off.

MMEA personnel conducted a check and found six containers of the cooking oil aboard the MV Danica Joy. It was ordered to return to port as the MMEA questioned the skipper and his crew over the controlled items seizure, Onn said.

“There are 96 passengers including 12 Malaysians onboard. We will refer the confiscated cooking oil to the Domestic Trade, Co-operatives and Consumerism Ministry for further action,” Onn added.

He said the five tons of cooking oil that were seized from the ferry were not for the export market. The vessel would be allowed to resume its journey to its port of origin (later Wednesday) after theMMEA completed its investigations

“The MMEA will continue to step up patrols in efforts to curb smuggling and other illegal activities along Sabah’s east coast waters,” he said.

Members of the public with information on such activities can channel the details to the MMEA to enable it to respond and bring those responsible to book, Onn added.
