Police to tighten Sabah’s sea border
SANDAKAN: Police have put in place an integrated security action plan to strengthen Sabah’s sea border against kidnappings and other criminal activities.
Internal Security and Public Order director Datuk Khalid Abu Bakar said the action plan for all police units would include cooperating with their counterparts in the Philippines to curb cross-border crime.
He said the move to tighten security along Sabah’s border with southern Philippines was to prevent incidents such as the Feb 8 kidnapping of two seaweed farm workers from Pulau Sebangkat off Semporna.
“We will hold training exercises from time to time to ensure that our men are well prepared to meet any threat, particularly in waters close to our neighbouring country,” Khalid said.
Another step being taken was to increase intelligence gathering efforts to stop criminals from entering the country, he added after visiting the Marine police unit here.
On the release of Tsen Vui Chung, 42, and Lai Wing Chau, 33, on Wednesday, Khalid said Malaysian police thanked their Philippine counterparts in helping to free them.
