SABAH ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS PROBLEM

Hiring illegals a big mistake – MTUC

“The proposal is quite worrying as it would increase the numbers of illegal immigrants in the state. It would also create opportunities to illegal immigrants to come into the state,”

“In Sabah, the estimated 800,000 illegal immigrants in the state are higher than Kadazandusun population. Their presence makes the local people live in fear,”

MTUC finds it “strange” why the Federation of Sabah Manufacturers (FSM) lauded the proposal.

‘Proposal to hire illegals needs careful study’

“Illegal immigration is a very sensitive issue in Sabah and the CM was right to say that the implementation of such a thing might backfire.

“We also don’t want to be seen as if we (the government) are ‘legalising’ the presence of the illegal immigrants in the country (by allowing them to work),”

Foreign labour must be properly documented

“If the country needs foreign labour, then they (foreign labour) should come in properly documented and not illegally and be given work.

Send all illegals back to their respective country first and if we do need foreign labour, then document them so we can monitor their movements and activities,”

“They are already breaking the law by entering illegally, and if the government and authority allow them to work, it is as if the government is encouraging them and others to break the law and enter the country illegally,”

Hiring illegal immigrants does not mean we welcome them – FSM

“It is estimated that there are about half a million or more illegal immigrants here. This has been a long term issue that we need to address and there seems to be no immediate solution for their presence in Sabah.

“Although enforcements are in place, this issue of illegal immigrants is not easy to resolve,

We need a strong government machinery to stop new ones from coming, while solving the existing ones who are already here.

“FSM would like to assure our friends in MTUC that priority will always be given to the local people first in all sectors even if the wages are slightly higher.

87 years to deport all illegals – MP

It will take the Government about 87 years to send back all the 1.75 million illegal immigrants present in Sabah. “The number of years to deport these illegal immigrants does not take into account the new influx of illegals. In 2008, the government deported 19,151 illegal immigrants to their countries of origin – 13,615 Filipinos, 5,278 Indonesians and 258 other nationalities,”

Out of the 3.25 million population in Sabah, 1.75 million were illegal immigrants.

Back in 1931, Sabah’s population was only 270,000 and about 400,000 during the formation of Malaysia.

“The Malaysian Government must have the political will to address the seriousness of the large presence of illegal immigrants in Sabah.

Serdang Member of Parliament Teo Nie Ching
