Over 3,000 illegals held during ops

KOTA KINABALU: More than 3,000 illegal immigrants were roped in during a recent integrated operation and are waiting for deportation.

State Special Task Force director Datuk Misri Barham told New Sabah Times when contacted yesterday that they were detained at the latest three-day massive operation mounted in Kota Kinabalu from 24 until June 26.

Operations to trace and arrest illegal immigrants including those in possession of dubious documents are being carried out in all districts in Sabah at least twice a month.

The integrated exercise was conducted with 25 government departments and among them were the police, Federal Special Task Force, Immigration Department, National Registration Department (NRD), Civil Defence Department, Chief Minister’s Department and Public Welfare Department.

Misri said as of June 28, there were 3,683 immigrants detained in four temporary detention centers (TDC) waiting deportation. They consist of 2,727 Filipinos, 923 Indonesians and others 33.

“We have 1,689 detained in Tawau, 1,487 in Papar, 409 in Sandakan and 98 in Kota Belud,” he said adding that each centre has a capacity to hold 10,000 detainees at any one time.

Misri said they will be able to detain more illegal immigrants after the centre in Menggatal has completed renovation work.

He reminded employers especially those involved in construction and plantation not to harbor illegal immigrants to avoid legal action being taken against them.
