KOTA KINABALU: A mild earthquake hit Sabah’s Crocker Range but hardly anyone knew about the rumbling of the earth beneath.
“I believe practically everyone in Ranau slept through the minor quake,” said State Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Masidi Manjun, referring to the 2.07am incident yesterday.
“This is not the first time that such a minor tremor happened in the district,” he said.
The Meteorological Department said in a statement that an earthquake of 2.6 magnitude on the Richter scale occurred 11km northeast of Ranau in Sabah.
Minor tremors might have been felt in and around Ranau, the statement added. Masidi, a Ranau resident, said there was no apparent effect on building structures.
“There is, however, some concerns among people that it might develop into a major earthquake,” he said.
Asked about the incident, Ranau district police chief Deputy Supt Suhaimi Hashim said: “I heard about it over the news but I did not feel anything.”
Seismic movements in Ranau on the foothills of Mount Kinabalu are said to be common.
An earthquake measuring over 5.6 magnitude shook Ranau in 1989. After shocks were also felt in the city and other parts of the west coast of Sabah.
