Kota Kinabalu January 05, 2010: Government schools in Sabah will not accept children whose foreign parents are working as labourers in the State.
This is because being foreign workers, they are not supposed to bring over their family members during their contract tenure.
Sabah Education Department Director Datuk Normah Gagoh said the directive is part of the education policy.
"It is against the law for foreigners who come to work as in Sabah to bring their families and children here.
"Therefore, if they attempt to register their children in government schools, we will reject it, except those who are working as professionals like expatriates or those who work in consulates or embassies," she said, Monday.
In addition, she said it has been the standard for all government schools to require the particulars of parents upon registering their children so as to check on their nationality and validity of their travel documents.
"It is imperative that government schools do such checks because we want to ensure the rights of local children and that only those with valid travel documents are admitted to schools.
"Foreign children who are born here and possess birth certificates but whose nationality is uncertain will not be accepted into the schools," Normah said.
On reports of children with illegal immigrant parents in government schools, she said so far the department has not received any complaint or report on that matter.
