SABAH GROUP CALLS FOR TRIBUNAL OVER LAND DISPUTE

KOTA KINABALU: A land tribunal is needed to hold enquiries on the perpetual disputes over land matters in the state, said the Sabah Law Association.

Association president Datuk John Sikayun said a tribunal was necessary to tackle disputes over land issues including the abuse of the “Power of Attorney” in some fraud cases.

On the suspension of the issuance of Anak Negeri Certificates (ANC), Sikayun said that the Government must act quickly over the suspension of such certificates as it would deny natives their constitutional rights.

There are many natives who were unable to obtain the benefit of the ANC and this deprived them of their constitutional and birth right to own native lands.

The issue must be viewed with urgency lest the Government faces embarrassing lawsuits regarding the constitutional suspension of the issuance of such certificates,” he said in reference to suspension of the issuance of ANCs since the 1980s.

The current state government has formed a ministerial committee to review the interpretation Definition of Natives Ordinance and the process of issuing such certificates.
