KENINGAU,6th October, 2009: Two non-governmental organisations here have expressed regret over the recent fight involving armed foreigners on Sunday.
Peribumi and Kepengguna questioned how the incident could have taken place in a place where people once assumed was a safe town.
Both groups urged the government to take action against the booming population of illegal immigrants in the Interior before the problem escalated.
They called for strict enforcement and an exercise to eradicate the presence of the paperless foreigners in Keningau.
On Sunday, prompt action by the public and police managed to prevent what could have been a bloody fight.
The 5pm incident created a scene when four foreigners gave chase to a young man at the night market area.
One of the four was seen to be carrying a machete wrapped in black plastic. A price tag on the weapon suggested that it had just been bought.
The four men however stopped chasing the young man and fled the scene after members of the public contacted the police.
The machete, which they hid under a vehicle, was recovered by a member of the public who later handed it over to the police.
Following the incident, police arrested a foreigner believed to be involved in the fight.
