DOMESTIC TOURISM GROWING DESPITE CHALLENGES: MASIDI

Domestic tourism in Sabah has withstood global economic uncertainties and the Influenza A (H1N1) pandemic.

"Our domestic tourism is still striving and grew at a rate of 5.1 per cent for the first six months this year.

"With the coming school holidays and the fact that Ramadan is going to end in the third week of September, I believe the number of people coming to Sabah especially local travellers, is going to increase,"

"Sabah recorded a drop of 1.9 per cent in international tourist arrivals and this figure is still within three per cent of our projected decline.

"Bear in mind that the World Tourism Organisation basically said that there will be a drop of 8 per cent in the tourist arrivals but in our case, the decline is 1.9 per cent,"

"Through my meeting in the Tourism Action Committee recently, we can conclude that there is a need to upgrade all our facilities so that we can attract more tourists to Sabah.

"For instance, Trusmadi, the second highest mountain in Sabah, is also fascinating and challenging as Kinabalu but the obstacle is the road problem,"

"The tour and travel agents and operators must make sure what they promise to their customers in their packages is honoured as there have been complaints that the players have not kept their promises at times.

"If the customers were promised a shark's fin dinner but later given porridge, then the players have not kept part of the deal.

"We must be trustworthy players in the tourism industry in order to gain the trust of the customers and further develop the industry,"

State Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister, Datuk Masidi Manjun
