SEMPORNA, 2009/09/02: A boat with 1,500 detonators and nine rolls of fuses was intercepted by marine police here at 3.30am on Monday.
Six Filipinos, all in their 40s, were also detained.
The detonators and fuses could be used to make bombs for fishing.
District police chief Deputy Superintendent Mohd Azim Khan Abdullah said yesterday police nabbed the boat following a tip-off from the public.
He said the detonators and fuses were kept in a black plastic bag.
"The suspects were about to hurl the plastic bag into the sea when the patrolling team seized it."
He said the items might have been smuggled into the country to make bombs that immigrants used to catch fish.
"This district depends heavily on the tourism industry because of its beautiful corals. I hope more people will come forward to help us."
