Ewon harvests paddy to mark the opening ceremony
RANAU, 21st May, 2009: Minister of Rural Development Datuk Ewon Ebin is urging unemployed youths to develop their family’s idle land with agricultural activities.
He said it would be much better if they could do it commercially to contribute towards household income rather than sit around and wait for a job.
“Agriculture is a potentially profitable sector if people are willing to put their time and effort into it. Large scale commercial plantations like oil palm, rubber and paddy would definitely bring a good return with lucrative income compared to the monthly salary of a public servant,” Ewon said.
He said this when speaking at the opening of the joint Kaamatan festival for Kg Tompios and Kg Bitoon, about 65 km from here. The minister also congratulated the district’s Agriculture Department for assisting the villagers to restore their idle 50-acre paddy field.
An officer from the department, Radius Timbuong, said the department would continue its programme to help villagers transform their idle land into paddy fields using high quality seeds and modern technology.
“Next year, another 50 acres of idle land will be developed. We will also expand the programme to nearby villages with suitable areas,” he said.
Ewon had also approved an allocation to buy a rice mill machine and provide zinc assistance to 16 families.
