Sabah will spend RM370 million in the next two years to develop five agropolitan projects which are expected to benefit 5,000 hardcore poor.
Covering some 12,000ha, the projects are being carried out in Kota Belud, Pitas, Kemabong, Beluran and Tongod where cases of hardcore poverty are rampant.
The allocation for the projects are RM70 million for Kota Belud, Pitas (RM120 million), Kemabong (RM40 million), Beluran (RM60 million) and Tongod (RM80 million).
Except for Kota Belud which will also see the development of dairy farming, the rest of the projects only involve rubber plantations.
"They show the government's serious commitment to address poverty in the state," he told reporters after chairing the State Poverty Eradication Steering Committee meeting here.
The Sabah Rubber Industry Board (SRIB) has been appointed as the lead agency in the development of the projects.
He said the projects would involve resettling of the hardcore poor and the Sabah Housing and Town Development Authority has been entrusted with the task of building the houses for them.
He said that preliminary works, such as surveying and preparation of Environmental Impact Assessment report, for the Kota Belud, Pitas and Kemabong projects have started and full development was expected to begin by this year.
A massive agropolitan project, involving 10,000ha, is also being developed on Banggi island north of Sabah under the auspices of the Federal Rural and Regional Development Ministry.
