12 in flag-burning case to be freed

LAHAD DATU: All 12 locals suspected of staging illegal assemblies and setting fire to Sabah flags on Saturday are expected to be released on police bail today.

Police chief Supt Md Suhaimi Abdul Rahman said the case had been referred to the Deputy Public Prosecutor’s Office in Kota Kina balu and the Attorney-General’s Chambers in Putrajaya.

“The instruction from Putrajaya is for the men to be released on police bail pending further orders,” he told reporters yesterday.

Nevertheless, the police would continue to monitor them, he said.

On Saturday, the police arrested the 12 males aged between 14 and 41 suspected of staging illegal assemblies and burning six Sabah flags here at 8.40am. — Bernama

Indonesians vote in Sabah

imageKOTA KINABALU: Hundreds of Indonesians packed polling booths at their consulate here and in Tawau to vote in their country’s general election.

With 67,460 registered voters in Sabah, the Indonesians, mainly plantation workers and housemaids, streamed into the polling booths at the Indonesian Consul office here from 7am yesterday.

A consul official coordinating the polls process, Abas Basori, said 4,100 would vote here, 8,000 in Tawau while others were postal voters.

“So far voting has been brisk and smooth. Employers have been cooperative and allowed their workers to come out to vote,” he said, adding that the elections were being contested by 36 parties for 580 parliamentary seats

827,000 buang undi

KUALA LUMPUR: Seramai 827,000 rakyat Indonesia yang berada di negara ini melaksanakan kewajipan apabila keluar mengundi semalam bagi memilih 560 calon merangkumi empat dewan legislatif termasuk Dewan Perwakilan Rakyat (ahli Parlimen) dan ahli Dewan Perwakilan Daerah (DPD) serta calon senator.

Duta Indonesia di Malaysia, Tan Sri Da'i Bachtiar, berkata selaras dengan pilihan rakyat yang diadakan di Indonesia, pihaknya mengambil inisiatif dengan turut mewujudkan pusat pengundian bagi memudahkan rakyatnya yang berada di Malaysia melaksanakan kewajipan terbabit.

Katanya, langkah itu diambil berikutan jumlah rakyat Indonesia yang berada di negara ini tinggi.

“Sebenarnya bilangan rakyat Indonesia yang ada di negara ini mengikut rekod 1.2 juta, namun atas sebab tertentu kita hanya mengesan 827,000 saja.

Selebihnya gagal dikesan berikutan alamat diberikan tidak lengkap selain segelintir darinya dipercayai sudah bertukar pekerjaan termasuk berpindah,” katanya.

Menurutnya, bagi memudahkan urusan pilihan raya itu, pihaknya membuka 10 pusat pengundian seluruh Malaysia membabitkan lima di sekitar kawasan Kuala Lumpur manakala selebihnya di pejabat Konsulatnya di Johor, Pulau Pinang, Pahang, Sabah dan Sarawak.
