Kota Kinabalu: Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Haji Aman hopes that national oil company Petronas will develop Sabah as the next oil, gas and petrochemical industrial hub in the region.
Citing Kertih in Terengganu that was once a fishing village but now a vibrant oil and gas industrial centre as well as Bintulu and Miri, he said the State Government machinery was committed to the success of this noble endeavour.
"I sincerely hope that Petronas will continuously develop and implement more oil and gas projects in Sabah and support the efforts of the State Government in developing this sector," he said at the opening of Petro-Pipe (Sabah) Sdn Bhd (PPS) at Kota Kinabalu Industrial Park (KKIP), Thursday.
On other developments, Musa said the Government was aware that Sabah is one of the poorest states in the country with high incidence of poverty and unemployment. However, things had been changing and improving.
He said the Sabah-Sarawak Gas Pipeline project involved the construction of gas pipeline spanning 500km (90km in Sabah and 410km in Sarawak) linking Kimanis in Sabah with the LNG Petronas Complex in Bintulu using pipes manufactured by PPS.
"This pipeline will transport part of the gas received by Sabah Oil and Gas Terminal from offshore fields such as Kota Kinabalu which has the capacity of producing 500 million cubic feet of gas by 2010," he said, adding the rest of the gas would be used for downstream projects in Sabah.
He said the implementation of the Sabah-Sarawak gas pipeline is expected to create far-reaching economic spin-offs.
"It will open up new development areas along the 550km and stimulate oil and gas related activities among the locals," he said.
