KOTA KINABALU: Sabah has the third highest number of births registered in the country between 2000 and 2008.
According to a written reply from the Home Affairs Ministry to Putatan MP, Datuk Dr Marcus Makin Mojigoh during a parliamentary sitting recently, Sabah registered 411,378 births, which is behind Selangor at 644,323 and Johor at 535,644.
The reply also stated that the highest number of births registered were of other races at 89,309 births.
The registered births in Sabah according to race are as follows: Bajaus (73,889), Dusuns (48,925), Kadazans (38,686), Bugis (32,134), Chinese (26,328), Sungai (15,120), Suluks (12,613), Rungus (9 ,027), Jawa (5,700), Bisaya (5,547), Tidung (4,890), Banjar (3,162), Irranun (2,925), Iban (2,725), Kedayan (2,488), Indians (1,433), Lundayeh (1,398) and others (89,309).
Dr Marcus also enquired on the number of foreigners who have been given permanent resident status in the country and in Sabah during the same period.
In Sabah, the State Government has granted 8,796 individuals PR status during the same period.
These comprised Filipinos (8,479), Indonesians (302), Taiwanese (2), Chinese (3), Britons (2), Indians (4), Thais (1), Bruneians (2) and one Australian.
