PBRS backs call for Gerakan to focus on winning seats
KOTA KINABALU 24th Oct, 2011: Parti Bersatu Rakyat Sabah (PBRS) has stated its support to the call for Gerakan to focus its efforts on winning seats for Barisan Nasional (BN) in the peninsula rather than fielding candidates in Sabah.
Saying that there was a basis to the call, its president Tan Sri Joseph Kurup said this was important so as not to affect the state BN’s chances of winning seats in the coming general election.
“We are of the opinion Gerakan should focus on areas which they lost in the last election,”
he told reporters after launching the Environment Week at the Kota Kinabalu Wetlands here, yesterday.
Kurup, who is Natural Resources and Environment deputy minister, was asked to comment on the statements of several state Umno leaders who wanted Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak to not allow Gerakan to field candidates in Sabah in the coming election.
Kurup said although there were Gerakan leaders in Sabah holding ministerial posts, the party obtained them by default and not from the support of the people.
“We do not actually know whether the support came from the public; and we are of the opinion also that in terms of principle, we must focus in places where we can win.
“In areas which we think local parties can win, I feel there is no reason why local parties should not contest there,” Kurup said.
Last Friday, Umno supreme council member and Housing and Local Government deputy minister Datuk Seri Lajim Ukin said Gerakan should focus its effort to win seats in the peninsula, especially in Penang.
Lajim was quoted as saying that the move was more important to ensure BN win big in the coming general election.
He added that candidates representing the Chinese must be picked from those parties which had been in Sabah for a long time such as the MCA, and from local parties such as Parti Bersatu Sabah and Liberal Democratic Party.
Prior to this, Kalabakan Member of Parliament Datuk Abdul Ghafur Salleh said the peninsula-based party would not be able to win seats in the state, thus it would become a liability to the BN.

What Ghapur said is true – LDP
“We must face the truth no matter how bitter it is. We have to take the bull by the horn and deal with the situation responsibly.

BalasPadamWe must face the truth no matter how bitter it is. We have to take the bull by the horn and deal with the situation responsibly.
BalasPadamI agree on this statement.
BalasPadamGerakan must prove that they are still relevant in Malayan before they planning to contest in Sabah.
