MURDER OF GIRL CLASSIFIED AS HIGH PROFILE CASE – POLICE

Murder of girl classified as high profile case – police

KOTA MARUDU 05/12/2012: Police are confident that investigation papers on the death of a teenage girl whose body was found at a roadside near Kampung Ranau, about 2km from Kota Marudu town on November 25, will be completed soon.

State Police Commissioner Datuk Hamza Taib said a thorough investigation was being carried out by the police and the motive of the case after a 40-year-old Pakistani man was arrested on November 27 to assist police investigation.

Hamza said the murder had now being classified as a high profile case as it had sparked huge interest from the public, bloggers and politicians on the progress made by the police in solving the case.

“We urge the public to stop speculating until investigation papers are completed.

“Our job, as law enforcement is to investigate, so let us complete our investigation,”

he said at a press conference at the state police headquarters in Kepayan here yesterday.

Several social network sites and blogs on the Internet have claimed that 16-year-old Norikoh Saliwa was gang-raped by five Pakistani men before killing and dumping her body by the roadside.

According to Hamza, the victim’s 32-year-old sister had lodged police reports against a couple of bloggers for spreading rumours on the death of her sister.

Hamza said an investigation was being carried out under Section 504 of the Penal Code for intentional insult with intent to provoke a breach of peace.

Meanwhile, Sabah Progressive Party (SAPP) president yesterday accused the ruling Barisan Nasional government of being directly responsible for the girl’s fate.

The incident, according to him, was a slap in the face for the BN government for refusing to recognize and sincerely resolve the chronic illegal immigrant problem in Sabah.

“How many more Norikoh cases have to happen in Sabah, and I believed this is not the only such case as many more are not reported,” he said when launching SAPP’s “Bangunlah! Untuk Sabah” campaign.

Yong, who is a former chief minister under the BN government, also hinted that the police were not doing enough to bring justice for the victim.

He said the local people, shaken and angered by the horrible incident and dissatisfied with how the authority and their leader had handled the case, were brave enough to come forward and speak up.

However, he said the police, rather than offering acceptable explanation or assurance to the public, had issued warning and intimidation instead.

Earlier, a video footage with pictures of the dead girl, including a close-up photo of her body in a coffin, was shown to the attendees at the launching ceremony.

SAPP Tandek Mudanita chief Pathlyn Leosie Mikat then explained in length to the crowd her views on how and why it was the fault of the government that local young girls like herself no longer felt safe at their home town, and how they have to risk their safety walking around illegal immigrants in their own home town.

“Her skull was fractured, her eyebrow skin torn, her shoulder bone broken and her neck appeared to have been chocked. Norikoh was a Form Four student at SM Perempuan Likas and had a bright future.

“She went back to her home town to spend the school holidays with her family but now she is dead. I am really mad and I hate that certain parties had let this happen and let us young women in Sabah become victims.

“I am truly sadden and angry that illegal immigrants are given MyKads and allowed to terrorize us. It is also disappointing that our leader can make a statement and say the victim was not raped even before the pathology report was completed,” she said.

Yong told reporters after the event that a lawyer, Peter Marajim, had volunteered to help the victim’s family to pursue the case and SAPP would assist the family in anyway it could.

He said the pathology report of the victim had not been released by the police and such report was usually revealed by the prosecutor only when a suspect had been identified and charged in court.
