WHEN ‘PULUT FLAG’ BECOMES CHICKEN FEED

When ‘pulut flag’ becomes chicken feed

PETALING JAYA September 2, 2012: Despite having to give away their creation as chicken feed, the organisers of a made-of-pulut Jalur Gemilang are proud that they have showcased Kelantanese culture.

“In Kelantan, pulut is used everywhere. It is used in festivities like Hari Raya and as hantaran during weddings,” Pasir Mas parliamentary constituency Merdeka Raya Council 2012 chairman Wan Mohd Hafiz Wan Awang said.

Pulut represents semangat (spirit). Besides, we wanted something different this year to show the spirit of independence,” he said.

The 30m-long Jalur Gemilang made of pulut (glutinous rice) was the centrepiece of the Merdeka Day celebrations in Pasir Mas, Kelantan.

Pasir Mas MP Datuk Ibrahim Ali donated RM20,000 to buy 30 bags of the glutinous rice and food colouring.

To a question, Wan Mohd Hafiz said that the pulut could no longer be consumed as it had hardened.

However, he stressed that it had not gone to waste.

The pulut flag”, he said, would be broken up and given to farmers to feed their chicken and ducks.

“We had planned how to dispose of it beforehand.

“The farmers will be happy because they will be getting free food,” he added.

Wan Mohd Hafiz said the project was also an attempt to get into the Malaysia Book of Records but he said the organisers were so busy that they could not call the officials to record the feat.
