TRANSFORMER BREAKDOWN CAUSES STATE-WIDE POWER OUTAGE IN SABAH

Transformer breakdown causes state-wide power outage in Sabah

KOTA KINABALU April 30, 2012: A transformer fault at the main power distribution station in Penampang has disrupted electricity supply throughout Sabah since 3.33am Monday.

The disruption has affected some 500,000 consumers and caused traffic snarls at certain locations in the city.

Sabah Electricity SDN BHD (SESB) engineers have been scrambling to repair the fault as the station is a key distributor of electricity to the east and west coast power grids.

It is learnt that SESB has gradually been restoring power to most major towns since 7am, although many areas remained without electricity.

SESB officials, who have not responded to media queries on the issue, were scheduled to hold a press conference later Monday.

Meanwhile, in a Twitter update, Energy, Green Technology and Water Minister Datuk Peter Chin Fah Kui apologised to all Sabahans over the power failure.

"My apologies to all Sabahans who had to endure an electricity blackout last night due to equipment failure at the Penampang main intake," he tweeted.

State Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Masidi Manjun, in a Facebook posting, said the main SESB power transformer at Penampang caught fire after an explosion that resulted in total blackout all over Sabah.

"SESB is repairing it and rerouting power supply so that it can be restored progressively. Power has in fact been restored in parts of Sabah and the city," he said.
