THE ERA OF GOVERNMENT KNOWS ALL IS OVER - NAJIB

Back 1M’sia, don’t be bystanders – PM

SANDAKAN April 21, 2012: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak reiterated that the era of government knows all is over, and urged everyone to support the 1Malaysia concept and not be bystanders.

He said it would be easier to become a ‘bystander’ and see if a certain change is even possible but reinstates that a bystander will be of no help to the nation’s progress.

“Please do not become bystanders I want to take everyone in Malaysia with me along this journey (towards progress), including the people of Sandakan,” he said.

Speaking to a packed Hakka Hall last night where the 1Malaysia meet-the-people session was held, Najib said the success of a nation and thus, government, lies in the hands of its people.

“Yes, as politicians we are supposed to talk and to be able to talk is our bowl of rice but equally important is for us to listen to the people because the era of government knows all is over.

“We cannot have monopoly of all wisdom. We need to engage the people and we need to talk to the people and through this process of engagement, we can make decisions based on the needs and interests of the people.”

Najib cautioned that a leader’s pride and arrogance will only lead to the detachment of the people from their leaders, stating that people want a responsive, caring government that listens.

“At the end of the day, we are here to serve the people. This is what I believe we should stand for,” he stressed.

The Prime Minister said the nation is currently gaining momentum and strength towards achieving its goal in becoming a high-income developed nation but this achievement can only be reached with the support of all communities.

“If you believe in the concept of 1Malaysia, then this country can only succeed if we have the support of all communities.” said Najib.

One of the many reasons to support BN, according to Najib, is BN’s clear direction to bring Malaysia forward, stating that the “test of the pudding is not when you’re out of office. It is what you did when you’re in office.”

He said it would be wiser to trust a leader with a clear leadership track-record, especially when the world is just recovering from the 2009 economic crisis.

“It is important to have leaders who know how to deal with a crisis, how to manage the country and who has the proven track record that people can see for themselves.” said Najib, adding that the opposition has none of those qualities.

He cites the opposition party’s fickleness on maintaining a stand on an issue and uses PTPTN as an example where an opposition member, who was the Finance Minister at the time, was fully supporting the loan scheme but has currently changed his mind and wants the scheme revoked.

“There is no place for political chameleons in this country.

What we want is leaders who say one thing and do it for the rakyat’s sake and not leaders who say one thing and when it’s convenient, they change their opinion.” said Najib.

Profound change has happened to this country under BN rule, he said.

“We can see how our country, under the leadership of BN, how huge of a change has happened as a result of the effort done by BN all this while.

As Prime Minister, I will do my best to the people of Malaysia.” he said.
