CULTIVATE SKILLS FOR OIL AND GAS INDUSTRY

Cultivate skills for oil and gas industry — Sabah DCM

KOTA KINABALU April 11, 2012: Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Dr Yee Moh Chai urges future generations to cultivate the necessary skills needed by the various sectors within the oil and gas industry.

“Just this past week, there are vacancies in Malaysia – from geologists to design engineers, from business developers to safety officers, from planners to project controllers – listed on the Jobs in Exploration and Production website (rigzone.com).

“This is a clear indication that job opportunities in the oil and gas industry will only grow as the industry grows,”

he said in his closing speech for Sabah Oil and Gas Conference and Exhibition 2012 here yesterday.

He added that the conference and exhibition enabled the public to see and understand better the opportunities available in the oil and gas industry and how these opportunities could be capitalised.

Yee further said human capital was the key to the success of any industry, particularly in an industry such as the oil and gas, where highly skilled professionals were the order of the day. He said technical skills was not sufficient and that soft skills was also necessary to communicate effectively, using the languages of the day. “We must also be able to work in teams, as solo work, individualism, is no longer feasible in today’s environment.”

Meanwhile, organizing chairperson Datuk Adeline Leong said the conference attracted 250 participants and 80 booths were set up in the two-day event.

Visitor count was also encouraging, as the event attracted around 900 and 1,000 visitors on Monday and yesterday.

Leong said the conference would be held again in April next year.
