Deputy minister may quit to launch new party

KOTA KINABALU Dec 29, 2011: The political temperature in Sabah politics is rising as there is talk that several senior state Barisan Nasional leaders may quit to launch a new party.
The political grapevine is speculating that a Federal Deputy Minister from Sabah Umno is about to head a newly-registered party – the Sabah Peoples Front (SPF) – in January in a bid to contest the next general election.
Sources aware of the political posturing by the Umno leader claimed that two other Members of Parliament and three assemblymen from the state Barisan component parties might team up with the deputy minister.
Talk about a move to form a new party has been abound since November with some claiming that the leader concerned was merely jockeying to put pressure on the local state leadership.
Yesterday, Sabah Barisan secretary Datuk Rahman Dahlan said he would “not give weight to the political talks”.
“There is no credence to it,” he said. “The leader concerned is a true Umno loyalist. I don’t think he would want to hurt the party particularly during the current political situation in the country.”
Some political observers suspect that the leader concerned “is playing political poker” to safeguard his position within Umno and Barisan.

LAJIM KETUA ‘SABAH PEOPLE FRONT’?
