Only 2,800 illegals go back voluntarily – director

KOTA KINABALU Nov 12, 2011: Immigration Director Mohammad Mentek said only a handful of illegal immigrants have returned to their countries of origin voluntarily since the registration exercise ended last month.

He said to date, only 2,800 people had left the state to return to their respective countries of origin from the 161,370 illegal immigrants registered under the 5P (Registration, Amnesty, Monitoring, Enforcement and Repatriation) programme.

They comprise 115,046 Indonesians, 45,894 Filipinos and 430 others.

“We are currently on our fourth ‘P’, which stands for Penguatkuasaan (Enforcement). We are tracing down those registered but have yet to return ‘home’. In fact, we have made a few arrests already. A major crackdown is in the pipeline,” said Mohammad but could not furnish the record.

He added that of the overall figure, 84,570 of them are still employed under various sectors after their bosses acted as guarantors for their work permits.

“A total of 63,146 are employed under the plantation sector, 14,406 (agriculture), 1,961 (manufacturing), 525 (construction) and 35 (services),” he told reporters after attending the Sabah Security Working Group meeting, chaired by State Secretary Datuk Sukarti Wakiman at Wisma Innoprise here yesterday.

Mohammad added that they are tracking down the remaining illegal immigrants who failed to return home after the amnesty period ended on Oct 31.

“We realise that some of them are faced with problems in obtaining travel documents from their respective embassies but we are discussing with the Filipino and Indonesian officials to expedite the issuance of their passports,” he said.
