Prisoner purposely commits crime to remain in jail
TAWAU October 8, 2011: A Filipino man who had only five more days to his remaining sentence, purposely stabbed an inmate so that he would not be released and remain in jail as he does not want to be deported.
Muktadir bin Basari, 29, was sentenced to 12 months’ jail by a Magistrate’s Court here for stabbing Maslan bin Basri, 28, at the Tawau Prison Department sewing workshop.
Senior Court registrar Ferhansha Farene Mohd Ferdaus meted out the sentence on Muktadir who was charged under Section 324 of the Penal Code which provides up to three years’ imprisonment, or a fine, or whipping or any of the two.
Prosecuting officer Chief Inspector Joan Lee told the court that the accused and the victim were working at the prison sewing workshop about 4pm on August 4, this year.
After work the accused did not return a scissors to the warden. Instead he unscrewed it and used it to stab the victim.
Maslan ran towards the warden two times before Mutadir stabbed himself in the chest to commit suicide.
The accused who was to be freed on August 9, said he did not want to be released from jail as he did not want to be sent back to his country and purposely committed a crime so that he would stay longer in jail, the court was told.
