DNA test can help confirm citizenship claims
IPOH: DNA testing can be a possible way to confirm a person’s citizenship status in certain cases.
Deputy Home Minister Datuk Lee Chee Leong said he believed this was workable in the case of children born out of wedlock.
”A child automatically always takes on the mother’s citizenship in cases where the parents are not legally married.
”In the event the father is Malaysian and the mother is a foreigner, then DNA testing can easily prove the child’s relationship with the father,” he told reporters after opening a special programme to help locals obtain Malaysian citizenship in Buntong here Saturday.
During the programme, Lee was approached by an unmarried couple whose children were unable to go to school as they did not have birth certificates or identity cards even though the father was a Malaysian citizen.
The couple, according to Lee, had not registered their marriage because the mother herself did not have a birth certificate.
The mother, he added, had no idea where or when exactly she was born.
”Of course, an easier way for unmarried parents (at least one of whom must be a Malaysian) to help their children obtain birth certificates is for them to legalise their marriage.
”But there are special cases where the parents cannot legalise their marriage or they are no longer together or when the mother cannot be traced that DNA testing can help solve the problem,” said Lee.
Noting that DNA testing was expensive, Lee said perhaps, there could be cooperation between the Home and Health Ministries to conduct such tests to assist those facing problems in getting their citizenship.

Walaupun cara ini memang boleh menentukan sama ada seseorang itu adalah orang tempatan ataupun tidak. Tapi idea ini tidak realistik. Ada beribu-ribu orang di negara ini yang tiada ID, ada juga yang tidak dapat dijejak. Lagipun membuat ujian DNA adalah amat mahal. Kalau mahu membuat ujian DNA juga perlu mendapatkan kebenaran mereka. Jika mereka enggan membuat ujian itu ataupun ibu-bapa tidak dapat dijejak, macam mana? Siapa yang menanggung kos ujian DNA yang mahal itu? Adakah rakyat yang perlu menanggung kos tersebut?

BalasPadamThe accuracy for the DNA test can be trusted. The problem is the cost and the time needed to run these tests. As many of the other commentators said, it is a very costly and time consuming procedure. Hopefully they will review again this method before implementing it.
