KENINGAU : Police are shocked when they discovered that a gang of schoolchildren were behind a house break-in where 27 handphones and electronic items were taken.
The culprits are aged between 12 and 17 years with the youngest culprit still in primary school.
District police chief DSP Zahari Mohames said six of the boys are secondary students.
The gang broke into the house of a phone shop dealer in Bingkor in the evening of Feb 23.
Speaking to reporters yesterday, DSP Zahari said that the phones of various makes worth close to RM9,000 were faulty.
“They belong to customers who have sent the phones for servicing,” he said.
Also taken were a PSP and a hand-held game console.
The boys were nabbed the following day after a police report was made by the 35-year-old victim, Julia Malindak@Malindok.
“Acting on the report, we investigated the case and it led to the arrest of the seven boys. We also seized 10 handphones, chargers and a PSP,” he said.
Police are locating the rest of the phone and they believe that they have been sold off cheaply.
“We suspects that they have sold them to students and we want all schools to take note of the matter,” he said.
He called on school authorities to keep a close eye on students carrying handphones to schools though they are barred from usage while in school.
DSP Zahari also expressed fear that handphones could be easily abused by children if they start downloading porn materials from illegal service providers.
At the same time, he urged the public to call the police if they were approached by strangers offering to sell cheap phones.
“We are monitoring the situation closely,” he said.
He reminded those who possess or sell stolen items could be charged in court under Section 411 of the Penal Code which provides for a jail term of up to five years and fine or both.
