Cops rope in SKMM, ISP in Sabah news portal probe
KOTA KINABALU: Police are working with the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (SKMM) and an Internet service provider in their ongoing probe into the online news portal sabahkini.net.
Sabah Police Commissioner Datuk Noor Rashid Ibrahim said investigations were initiated after several reports were lodged two weeks ago over articles relating to an oil palm land dispute.
“Several groups and individuals felt aggrieved by the stories published on the site and lodged police reports, prompting us to begin our probe,” he said here Tuesday.
He said police were investigating the news portal under Section 500 of the Penal Code for defamation.
However, he added, police had yet to record a statement from the news portal’s editor “Mutalib MD” or other individuals.
He also reminded the public that the force “will not tolerate any attempt” to undermine its integrity through blogs or other publishing platforms.
He said that blog entries or published articles must be written within the limits of the law and should be substantiated by facts, national news agency Bernama reported.
“Everybody has the right to talk about anything or write about anything but it must be within the limits of the law.
“I, as the chief of the police force in Sabah, will make sure that the rule of law prevails in every level of society.
“And the law will be enforced fairly, in a just and effective manner,” he told the same news conference, Bernama said.
