Ranau: The Kadazandusun community should look at Sugandoi Kaamatan (ethnic singing contest) as a platform for preserving and promoting their language and cultural heritage and not simply a singing contest.
Ranau Member of Parliament, Datuk Siringan Gubat, said they also needed to appreciate the lyrics and message as he believed the content of each of the songs had cultural elements and represented unique identity of the community that must continue to be safeguarded.
He said Sugandoi Kaamatan also acts as a platform for members of the community, particularly youths, to try out or show their singing talent because from here they may go further and make singing a profession.
"We should not be surprised to hear Kadazandusun songs being played outside this country, like in our neighbouring countries and Taiwan now, because Kaamatan has been recognised by the Government as one of main annual events for our community," he said.
Kaamatan is now not only already well known among tourists to our country but also has become a main tourist attraction, particularly to Sabah, he said, adding based on all these, Sugandoi suited to be called a "Traditional Heritage for Generation."
Siringan said this when officiating the Ranau district-level Sugandoi Kaamatan 2009 final here recently which saw two categories being contested, including the Children Under 12 Category, which was won by Joyce Rufiona Juanis, while Velerice Paimin and Ordellamay Denis emerged second and third, respectively.
The other is the Adult Category where Zeanderia Justine was adjudged as the champion, while Johan Habil Nanuil and Eddrine Jutin emerged second and third, respectively.
District Officer Siriman MF Basir, who is also the district-level Kaamatan organising committee chairman, and the Sugandoi Kaamatan organising chairman, Benedict Bungkilan, were also present.
