NIK AZIZ: IMPROVE RACE RELATIONS

Datuk Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat urges Malaysians to go back to their religious rootsKOTA BARU, 2009/05/14: Menteri Besar Datuk Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat has called on Malaysians to make May 13 this year a turning point to strengthen their religious life and improve race relations.

At a press conference at the state secretariat yesterday, he said that if previously May 13 was associated with a tragedy, in future it should be turned into a new momentum.

As a starting point, he said, Malaysians should turn to loving themselves first by going back to their religion.

"To love ourselves, we need to be in good health and peaceful. However, we must lead a disciplined religious life for us to achieve peace, calmness and happiness."

Nik Aziz also said there was a need for a really people-oriented government.

"As we have chosen a democratic parliamentary system, the people must be given their civil rights, freedom of speech and assembly and rule of law and natural justice.

"The people must also be protected from the rising cases of snatch thefts, rapes, murders and robberies."
