KUALA LUMPUR: MIC is backing the suggestion by MCA that the Public Service Department award scholarships to students who get the highest grades.
President Datuk Seri S Samy Vellu said the practice of giving out the scholarship based on merit was good for everybody as the government was promoting 1Malaysia.
However, he said the matter must be raised in the cabinet for its approval.
MCA had, on Saturday, issued a statement through its Information and communication bureau chairman Lee Wee Kiat that scholarships be awarded to students with excellent academic results, regardless of race, and to students from poor families.
Lee was quoted as saying that the party was disappointed by comments by Perkasa president Datuk Ibrahim Ali criticising MCA president Datuk Seri Ong Tee Keat request for PSD’s selection criteria be reviewed.
Samy said that since the Cabinet had decided on the quota about who should get the scholarships, it would, therefore, “be the one given the task to decide a review.”
Samy was speaking to reporters after launching Plus Eight 2009 programme a project organised by Yayasan Strategik Sosial in co-operation with Women, Social and Community Development ministry.
The programme picked under-achieving students from 110 schools in selected states, Kedah, Penang, Perak, Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, Pahang, Negri Sembilan Malacca and Johor to participate in this character building, vocational and mind development programme.
