Umno vice-president aspirant Datuk Seri Dr Rais Yatim has expressed gratitude to Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad for the former prime minister's backing and expressed the hope that the support would translate into votes at the party elections on Thursday.

"I've let it rest in the past. I've forgotten about it. They (Umno) have accepted me. Dr Mahathir has put me as the Director of By-elections. All the by-elections since 1999. He gave me the responsibility to make sure we win all the other by-elections," said Muhammad.

Umno Information Chief Tan Sri Muhammad Muhamad Taib said that whatever baggage he had in the past on the Australian scandal should remain in the past.
