Special module for National Service trainees who can’t read and write
KUALA LUMPUR: More than 1,000 out of 11,000 students chosen to undergo National Service training from last year’s third batch were found to be illiterate, said Deputy Defence Minister Datuk Dr Abdul Latiff Ahmad.
This prompted the National Service Training Department to develop an I-Smart module to help those found to be weak to improve their 3M (reading, writing and arithmetic) skills.
“We found that more than 1,000 trainees could not read, write or count.
“With the help of the Education Ministry, the department formulated a module to help them,” Dr Latiff said here yesterday after flagging off 307 buses carrying 19,418 trainees to various camps.
Present was the department’s director-general, Datuk Abdul Hadi Awang Kechil.
Dr Latiff said the special module would not interfere with other training modules at the camps as it would involve only 30 special instructors and those found to be weak in the 3M skills.
“It was proven that after attending only 30 credit hours of the module during their training last year, the participants could read and write.” Meanwhile, in response to the Malaysian Press Institute’s proposal for a special course to prepare journalists for assignments in war zones, Bernama quoted Dr Latiff as saying that the ministry welcomed any form of cooperation with MPI.
“We cannot fight fate. If it’s meant to be, it will be, but the least we can do is go (to the war zones) with proper equipment and preparation.” The proposal came about following the death of BernamaTV cameraman Noramfaizul Mohd Nor, 39, while on a humanitarian mission with Putera 1Malaysia Club to Mogadishu, Somalia.
BalasPadam"We found that more than 1,000 trainees could not read, write or count."
BalasPadamOMG!!!!!
