PAS TO STAND IN LABUAN?

PAS selected to contest Labuan seat

images LABUAN September 4, 2012: Labuan PAS yesterday announced that it would represent Pakatan Rakyat (PR) in contesting against Barisan Nasional (BN) in the 13th general election for the Labuan parliamentary seat.

Federal Territory PAS commissioner Haji Mohamad Noor bin Mohamad said the seat distribution in the federal territory had been agreed by the top federal territory opposition leaders from PAS, PKR and DAP.

Mohamad said DAP would contest in Seputeh, Cheras, Segambut, Kepong and Bukit Bintang, while PKR would stand at Bandar Tun Razak, Lembah Pantai, Batu and Wangsa Maju.

“PAS will stand in Titiwangsa, Putrajaya and Labuan.

“The agreement was made on August 18 and an agreement letter had been issued regarding the seat distribution.

“So it is clear that PAS will stand here in Labuan,” he said during the meeting of Pakatan Rakyat leaders here.

He said further that Labuan PR should now focus on defeating Umno from BN and it must be a one-to-one fight.

“We must now move our machinery at maximum level to ensure our victory here in Labuan. To take over the Putrajaya administration, we must try to win all parliamentary seats contested by PR,” he said.

Labuan PAS did not disclose the candidate to contest against Umno here.

Meanwhile, Labuan PAS president Haji Amir Haji Zahari said the mood to change the government here was very high.

He said based on the 2008 general election result here, BN support in seven places, for example in Ganggarak, Victoria Utara, Ramsay and Kerupang had dropped.

Amir said among the things planned by Labuan PAS in their manifesto was to ensure that 60 per cent of the locals must be involved in the oil and gas industry.

Based on their survey, the local involvement in the industry be it directly or indirectly, was not even 20 per cent.

“In Sarawak and Malacca, they demand that there must be some 70 per cent of their people involved in the oil and gas industry. The revenue of the industry here is high but the locals do not benefit much from it.

“We want to focus on investing the oil and gas revenue for the people’s welfare, including in the economy, social, assistance for education and relief, and to develop infrastructure and facilities for the people here.

“The oil and gas revenue also will be used to upgrade our hospital facility, while providing far more quality service if the people give us the mandate here,” he said.

Amir added the BN might claim that if PR rule this country, it would become bankrupt.

“For foreign direct investment (FDI), Selangor has shown its performance as the top FDI centre in the country, followed by Penang and Kedah. These three states are ruled by PR and the allegation by BN led by Umno is baseless.

“Our other plan is to propose to review the decision to build the bridge to link Labuan to mainland Sabah at Menumbok after it was scrapped by the government,” he said.
