KOTA KINABALU 02 May 2012: A petroleum engineering faculty will be set up soon in Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS).
Former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad said it was about time that UMS established a new faculty focusing on oil and gas as Sabah would soon become a rich state because of its natural resources.
With the setting up of the petroleum engineering faculty, Dr Mahathir was confident that Sabah would benefit from its oil resources.
"We definitely need engineers in petrochemical and petroleum fields, and we cannot lose this opportunity just because we don't have the knowledge.
"Sabah people will focus on mastering oil and gas knowledge and this is a field which is vastly developed in the country," he said at the launching of the Kinabalu Lecture Series at UMS Chancellor Hall here yesterday.
Dr Mahathir also praised Petronas for its good management and contributions to the economy.
"In Malaysia, Petronas management is different from other oil and gas companies because we are involved in all fields, from downstream to upstream."
Dr Mahathir stressed that education in Sabah had improved since UMS was opened.
He encouraged people in the state to venture into different education fields to improve themselves and compete with others.
