AMENDMENTS TO ELECTION OFFENCES ACT CAN GIVE RISE TO UNETHICAL ACTIVITIES – MP

Amendments to Election Offences Act can give rise to unethical activities – MP

KOTA KINABALU April 24, 2012: The amendments to the Election Offences Act 1954 clearly reflects the government’s failure to carry out a proper study, according to Fuziah Salleh, the vice president of Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR).

The Kuantan member of parliament who was involved in the marathon seven-hour debate on the bill in the Dewan Rakyat recently, stressed that the basic eight demands by the Coalition for Free and Fair Elections (Bersih) should be fulfilled to ensure clean and fair elections in Malaysia.

“Two provisions were excluded, while the others were passed by the Dewan Rakyat despite the debate having taken seven hours before it came to a conclusion.

“PKR is very disappointed with the new amendments, including the removal of the mandatory requirement of appointing a polling or counting agent by a candidate’s election agent.

“The other amendment passed was extending the waiting distance for the public from the polling centre on polling day, from 50 metres to 100 metres, except for voters who come to cast their votes,” she said.

Fuziah added Bersih’s demand to clean the electoral roll had not been addressed, and the amendments have made it even worse because the changes would effectively give rise to unethical activities to be carried out during the general elections.

Kalau parti pembangkang sanggup mengetepikan kepentingan sendiri dan kerjasama, mungkin akan memberi saingan yang giat untuk BN.
