PAS LEADERS CLAIMED THAT THEIR VISIT TO THE CHURCH WAS TO BREAK THE PERCEPTION THAT THEY WERE RELIGIOUS EXTREMISTS.

Don't Preach To Us About Religion Tolerance -Maximus

SIBU, May 9 (Bernama) -- Peninsular Malaysian- based opposition parties had nothing to teach to Sarawakians and Sabahans about inter-religious interaction and tolerance, Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS) deputy president Datuk Seri Maximus Johnity Ongkili said Sunday.

He said Sarawakians and Sabahans had all the while, proven that they were more tolerant in dealing with multi-religious and multi-racial issues.

"Actually, they should have come to Sabah and Sarawak to learn from us that (inter-religious) consultation is done at the highest level and had never been an issue," he told reporters when visiting Sekolah Kebangsaan Nanga Tutus, about an hour's boat ride from here.

He was asked to comment on the move by several opposition leaders, including those from PAS, who went to visit the Sacred Heart Church here, where most Christians attended Sunday mass.

PAS leaders Khalid Samad and Siti Mariah Mahmud claimed that their visit to the church was to break the perception that they were religious extremists.
