JITRA: Police on their morning rounds found two cows stuffed in the back of an Proton Iswara Aeroback abandoned at the roadside near SRJK (T) Paya Kamunting here yesterday.

The cows, still alive, were laid down side by side, their feet tied.

The back seats of the car had been removed.

Kubang Pasu district police chief Superintendent Sawaludin Hame-nudin said police checked the car at 7.15am, noting that it had sustained a tyre puncture.

"One of the cows was heavily pregnant. We believe the cows were stolen from nearby areas by two members of a local theft gang.

"We also found eight syringes in the car containing what is believed to be animal sedatives."

Kubang Pasu Veterinary Department veterinary assistant Mohd Zaidi Mohd Tahir said the type of sedative found had not yet been determined.

The department did not rule out the possibility that the cows were smuggled in from Thailand.
