SABAH TO WOO MORE AIRLINES - MASIDI

imageKOTA KINABALU, June 8 (Bernama) -- Sabah is wooing more airlines to fly here and has held talks with the Abu Dhabi-based Etihad Airways.

image State Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Masidi Manjun said Etihad Airways had already been promoting Sabah in Europe and the East Asian markets.

"As 96 per cent of the tourists coming from abroad travel by air, we have to get more airlines to fly to Kota Kinabalu.

image"Etihad has a good network in Europe. We hope it will start with indirect flights (from KL) and over time generate enough passenger load to justify direct flights to Sabah from Europe," he told reporters after meeting Tourism Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ng Yen Yen here, Monday.

image Earlier, Ng said the country's tourism industry had recorded a slight growth in the first quarter but it could be affected in the second quarter as hotels and tour operators had reported a decline in bookings due the influenza A(H1N1) scare.

She said as Sabah banked on nature products, it should ensure that the facilities at tourism and public places were well maintained.
