FAILURE IN ATTRACTING FOREIGN INVESTORS MAINLY DUE TO LACK OF GOOD INFRASTRUCTURE

Mukhriz blames weak infrastructure for low Kelantan FDI

JERLUN, Aug 27 — International Trade and Industry Deputy Minister Datuk Mukhriz Mahathir is disputing PAS president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang’s recent claim that Umno had been discouraging foreign investors from investing in Kelantan.

He said Kelantan’s failure in attracting foreign investors to the state was mainly due to the state’s lack of good infrastructure.

“Foreign investors want to see proper provision of electricity and clean water supply, highways and a port to facilitate the transfer of raw materials, for instance.

“The [Barisan Nasional] government has never sabotaged states under [Pakatan Rakyat] rule but in fact, it strives to attract foreign investors to these states for the long term,” he told reporters after an Aidilfitri function with Jerlun undergraduates, here, today.

He was commenting on Hadi’s reported statement recently, in which he claimed that Umno was prepared to campaign among foreign investors to stop them from investing in Kelantan over hudud issue.

Mukhriz said states like PR-ruled Selangor and Penang, on the other hand, were able to develop rapidly as they could attract foreign investors, largely due to the efforts of the federal government.

The Jerlun member of parliament said the ministry including its minister, Kelantan-born Datuk Mustapa Mohamed, had repeatedly stated that it did not practise favouritism in attracting investors to the states.

On another note, Mukhriz, who is also Kedah Umno liaison deputy chief, said the state Umno manifesto for the coming general election was still under discussion, taking into consideration issues that were important to the people.

He said the manifesto this time would be more about development, which could benefit the people, and not the kind that was too dependent on agriculture.
